Medusa
This vivid floor mosaic (1st–2nd cc.) presents Medusa with coiling serpents in place of hair, their bodies twisting around her face. As an apotropaic image—a motif meant to ward off harm—her petrifying gaze was believed to repel danger and misfortune. Positioned at the center of domestic or bathing spaces, the scene turned mythological terror into a protective emblem.
