Cosmatesque Twisted ColumnsVassalletto Workshop
These spiral marble columns (c. 1215), attributed to the Vassalletto family, adorn the cloister of San Giovanni in Laterano. Inlaid with cosmatesque mosaic, they blend classical forms with medieval ornamentation. The cloister reflects the synthesis of Roman, Byzantine, and Gothic traditions at the heart of papal Rome’s spiritual and artistic renewal.
