I am petting goats at Marie Antoinette’s pastoral retreat in Versailles. The Hameau de la Reine, built in the 1780s, offered the queen an escape into a stylized rural world. The animals were part of her model farm, blending rustic charm with courtly play in a living tableau of idyllic simplicity.
