The Damned Cast into HellRogier van der Weyden

This panel from the Last Judgment Altarpiece (1445–50) shows the condemned hurled into a fiery abyss, their twisted bodies expressing terror and despair. The raw realism of their faces and gestures drives home the consequences of sin. Displayed in Beaune’s Hôtel-Dieu, the image warned patients and visitors alike that salvation and damnation hung in the balance of divine justice.
