Marmagne
Marmagne is a small commune in Burgundy’s Côte-d’Or whose quiet farming landscape is inseparable from the Cistercian presence of nearby Fontenay Abbey. Founded in 1118 under the influence of St Bernard of Clairvaux, the monastery turned a sheltered valley into a disciplined economy of prayer, labour, water, and ordered stone—an ideal later recognised in its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Marmagne’s lanes and fields, everyday rural life still feels threaded to that older contemplative order.
