Trifacial Trinity Painting

59
This painting (c. 1750–1770) by an anonymous Cuzco artist depicts the Trinity as a single figure with three faces, featuring four eyes, three noses, and three mouths. Known as the Three-Faced Trinity, this representation was controversial in Europe but persisted in colonial America as a didactic tool. Its monstrous appearance risked misleading the faithful about God’s nature, reflecting a blend of medieval iconography with colonial religious education.
