The Funeral of AtahualpaLuis Montero

65
Painted in 1867 by Luis Montero, this work depicts the dramatic interruption of Atahualpa’s funeral rites by his wives, as conducted by Spaniards. Inspired by William Prescott’s account of the conquest of Peru, it features 33 figures against a backdrop of imaginative Inca architecture. The painting resonated with Peru’s nationalistic spirit after the Chincha Islands conflict with Spain.
