This section of Juan O’Gorman’s Retablo de la Independencia (1960–61) depicts key figures and events from the Mexican War of Independence. Central is Miguel Hidalgo, whose 1810 call to arms sparked the revolt against Spanish rule. Surrounding him are other independence leaders, each contributing to the liberation narrative. The mural’s symbolic elements reflect the struggle’s intensity and the enduring spirit of freedom that reshaped Mexico’s identity.
