This intimate landscape (c. 1610) portrays St Paul the Hermit meditating among ancient ruins overtaken by vegetation. Crumbling arches, toppled columns, and encroaching greenery suggest the fragility of human monuments. The saint’s calm absorption in prayer contrasts with the decay around him, embodying Counter-Reformation ideals of solitude, ascetic discipline, and trust in the endurance of the divine.
