This monumental cartoon (c. 1510) in charcoal and chalk on joined sheets of paper shows philosophers arranged in a deep architectural space. It served as a full-scale guide for transferring the composition to the Vatican fresco. The precise perspective and carefully modeled figures demonstrate High Renaissance planning before paint touched the wall.
