Ambrosiana Picture GalleryPinacoteca Ambrosiana
Ambrosiana Picture Gallery was created by Cardinal Federico Borromeo as part of Milan’s Biblioteca Ambrosiana, a rare early experiment in public learning: the library opened in 1609 and the gallery followed in 1618 to guide taste, devotion, and scholarship after the Council of Trent. Its small, quiet rooms bring Renaissance and Baroque painting—Raphael, Caravaggio, and Lombard masters—into conversation with Leonardo da Vinci’s Milanese legacy, including Portrait of a Musician . For many Milanese, the Ambrosiana is as much civic memory as museum.
