Ossuary Wall

Stacked skulls and long bones form stable walls along a narrow underground corridor. This ossuary section (late 18th–early 19th cc.) was created when remains from overcrowded cemeteries were transferred into disused quarry tunnels. The ordered geometry of the bones demonstrates how Enlightenment reforms combined sanitary concerns with a rational, architectural treatment of mortality.
