La pintura de Giuseppe Cesari representa una escena de la leyenda romana durante la guerra entre Roma y Alba Longa. Muestra el combate entre los trillizos Horacios y Curiacios, destacando al único Horacio superviviente, que derrota a los Curiacios heridos. La historia continúa con Horacio matando a su hermana por llorar a un Curiacio, su prometido, lo que conduce a su condena inicial y posterior absolución.
