This panel by Pere Vall (c. 1410) depicts Saints Benedict and Onuphrius. Saint Benedict, founder of Western monasticism, is shown in a black habit with a book and crozier, symbolizing his abbot role. Saint Onuphrius, a hermit, is depicted with long hair covering his body and hands raised in prayer, representing ascetic devotion. Part of an altarpiece’s bottom row, it reflects the spiritual ideals and artistic style of late medieval Catalonia.
