This painting by Francisco Gallego (c. 1490) depicts the martyrdom of Saint Acacius and 9,000 soldiers on Mount Ararat. After converting to Christianity, they were persecuted by allied kings, including Persian King Sapor. The artwork illustrates their crucifixion, a Roman execution method.
