Saint Jerome and Saint Ambrose PaintingJuan de Borgoña
Juan de Borgoña’s panels (c. 1510) depict Saint Jerome and Saint Ambrose, originally part of a predella from a larger altarpiece. These Spanish late-Gothic works show the saints with books and quills, symbolizing their biblical scholarship. Their ecclesiastical ranks are indicated by garments and headgear, such as the cardinal’s hat for Jerome and bishop’s miter for Ambrose.
