Belshazzar’s FeastJuan Carreño de Miranda

This Spanish Baroque painting (1650–1670) shows Daniel 5, when King Belshazzar sees a divine hand inscribe his doom. The scene warns against hubris—excessive pride or defiance toward the divine—punished by judgment. Its drama and opulence echo Baroque moral allegory, a theme that later inspired Rembrandt and others to depict the same moment of awe and terror.
