Acacius and the 10,000 Martyrs (Painting)Francisco Gallego

54
Francisco Gallego’s painting (c. 1490) depicts the martyrdom of Saint Acacius and 10,000 soldiers who converted to Christianity after a victory on Mount Ararat. Despite pressure from allied kings, including Persian King Sapor, they refused to renounce their faith and were crucified, a Roman execution method. This rare subject in Spanish art may have been part of a larger altarpiece, adding depth to its historical narrative.
