Jacques de Molay Rejecting False ConfessionsFrançois Fleury-Richard
In this oil painting by François Fleury-Richard (1777–1852), Jacques de Molay, last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, is depicted defiantly rejecting false confessions under duress. Set in a stark Romanesque chapel, the restrained palette and light convey the gravity of the Templar’s fate. Created during the Romantic era, the work reflects 19th c. fascination with martyrdom and medieval history.
