This Empire-style armchair (early 19th c.) features a carved sphinx head, drawing on Napoleon’s fascination with Egypt after his 1798 campaign. The gilded wings and pharaonic headdress evoke the aesthetics of conquest and exoticism. Such chairs celebrated imperial grandeur while reflecting the era’s neoclassical and orientalist obsessions.
