This chess table and Chinese-style chairs (early 19th c.) belonged to Napoleon during his exile on St Helena. Shipped by the East India Company, they reflect the global reach of British trade and the emperor’s adaptation to constrained imperial life. The chess set, a symbol of strategy, evokes his continued mental engagement and enduring dignity in captivity.
