Baroque Retablo with the Virgin

In this 18th-c. Quito school retablo, a sculptural Virgin takes center stage beneath a dynamic tableau of Christ’s baptism. Gilded columns, Solomonic scrolls, and an army of painted and carved saints ascend in concentric tiers, creating a dramatic vision of divine hierarchy. The uppermost eagle with crown symbolizes the triumph of salvation.
