Max is in front of the marble ensemble of tower, cathedral, and baptistery in Pisa’s main sacred precinct (from 1173 on). The freestanding bell tower began to lean soon after construction because of unstable subsoil. This Pisan Romanesque (a medieval style with striped marble and arcades) complex forms a UNESCO World Heritage site that illustrates the city’s maritime-era power.
