In this dramatic marble group (c. 1610), Giovanni Bellandi portrays St Michael triumphing over Satan. The archangel, serene yet forceful, raises his sword as he pins the writhing demon beneath him. Sculpted for the Milan Cathedral, the work embodies the Counter-Reformation’s call for militant virtue and the Church’s heavenly justice.
