The Denial of Saint PeterJusepe de Ribera
This painting (1615–16) captures Saint Peter's denial of Christ, a pivotal Gospel moment. Ribera, influenced by Caravaggio, sets the scene in a contemporary tavern. Peter, on the right, is accused by a couple, while guards play at a table. The horizontal composition and dramatic lighting reflect Caravaggio's impact. Initially misattributed, it now stands as a testament to Ribera's early Roman period.
