Christ and the AdulteressTintoretto
This scene (c. 1550) depicts the Gospel of John episode where Jesus confronts scribes and Pharisees over a woman accused of adultery. His challenge, Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her, exposes hypocrisy and calls for mercy. Tintoretto’s Mannerist style appears in the oblique composition, sharp lighting contrasts, and elongated, animated figures set amid classical architecture, heightening the drama of divine justice and forgiveness.
