This panel from the Last Judgment altarpiece (1445–50) shows an angel guiding the saved toward the gates of paradise. The figures, naked to symbolize purity and equality before God, gesture in prayerful gratitude. Painted for the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune, the scene offered hope to patients that earthly suffering could be transcended by eternal salvation in heaven.
