Istanbul Archaeological Museums
Founded in 1891 by painter-archaeologist Osman Hamdi Bey, Istanbul Archaeological Museum signaled the late Ottoman shift from exporting antiquities to protecting and studying them at home. Set beside Topkapı Palace, its galleries trace Anatolia, Mesopotamia, and the classical Mediterranean through inscriptions, sculpture, and grave goods, culminating in the famed Alexander Sarcophagus , whose battle and hunt reliefs turn royal power into living stone. Here Istanbul’s deep past feels near enough to touch.
