Dying Lion

This Assyrian relief (c. 645 BC) shows a lion staggering forward, pierced by arrows yet still baring its teeth and claws. Deeply cut muscles and the bristling mane convey both agony and resilience. Such lion-hunt scenes lined the North Palace of King Ashurbanipal at Nineveh, glorifying the ruler whose controlled violence against a powerful beast signaled his divinely sanctioned role as guardian of order over chaos.
