Lapith and Centaur in Battle
A scene from the Parthenon metopes (447–438 BC) shows a Lapith gripping a Centaur’s hair, poised to strike. The Centaur’s lifted arms and twisting torso signal pain and resistance. In myth, the Lapiths of Thessaly saw their wedding feast descend into chaos when drunken Centaurs tried to seize the brides. The clash became a moral tale for Classical Athens, contrasting Greek social order with untamed nature.
