This automaton ship from Augsburg (c. 1585) takes the form of a richly ornamented galleon and served as a spectacular banquet centerpiece. Designed to roll along the table, it played music and beat tiny drums while figures paraded across the decks. The bow cannon fired first, triggering the others in succession. Combining clockwork, spectacle, and imperial imagery, such machines transformed elite dining into a theatrical display of wealth, engineering skill, and political prestige.
