Stern of the Vasa Warship

This warship’s towering stern (1626–28) bristles with densely carved ornament. Heraldic lions, royal portraits, and Roman soldiers proclaim the dynasty’s claim to heroic lineage and global power. Rising high above the waterline, the structure functioned as a floating façade of authority, turning naval technology into a stage for political propaganda.
