This circular island villa (2nd c.) includes a ring of columns around a water-filled moat that cuts it off from the rest of the complex. Despite its modern name, it functioned not as a theater but as a self-contained residential suite with study, library, and baths. Its controlled access demonstrates Hadrian’s interest in philosophical retreat combined with carefully staged luxury.
