Cryptoporticus with Skylights

1072
This cryptoporticus, or a covered passageway often used for storage or movement (2nd c.) at Hadrian’s Villa served as a subterranean corridor. Skylights in the vaulted roof provided light and ventilation, merging utility with elegance. It exemplifies Roman architectural skill in managing movement, climate, and ambiance, reflecting the sophistication of imperial design.
