Cryptoporticus

This subterranean corridor (2nd c. AD), or cryptoporticus , served as a concealed passage linking key areas of Hadrian’s Villa. Its dim, vaulted structure offered privacy and cool respite from the sun, while enabling discreet movement of servants and goods. The cryptoporticus embodies the hidden complexity and logistical sophistication of imperial Roman architecture.
