Nile and Tiber River Gods

367
These reclining marble figures (2nd c. AD) personify the Nile and Tiber rivers, with symbolic fauna—crocodile for the Nile, she-wolf for the Tiber. Representing Rome’s embrace of both native and foreign power, they reflect the empire’s geographic and ideological unity, the mythic fusion of Roman strength and Egyptian mysticism. Statues of Hermes, caryatids, and Amazons are in the background.
