Strasbourg Cathedral grew from a Romanesque beginning in the 12th c into a Gothic landmark shaped in the 13th–15th cc., crowned by its single spire completed in 1439, once the tallest structure in Europe. Its sculpted portals and rose window turned doctrine into stone and light for a trading city on the Rhine frontier. In Alsace’s shifting borderland, the cathedral became Strasbourg’s civic compass—at once Marian shrine, urban stage, and enduring sign of belonging.
