تلتقط لوحة الزيت لعام 1904 لخوان بوتارو ليبياني إعلان استقلال بيرو في ساحة بلازا مايور في ليما. وتخلّد هذه اللوحة القماشية، بقياس 303 × 445 سم، حماسة أمة تتحرر من الحكم الاستعماري. وتمثل بلازا مايور، بوصفها مركزًا محوريًا للحياة السياسية والاجتماعية، رمزًا للهوية والسيادة البيروفيتين. ويعكس عمل ليبياني القوة التحويلية للاستقلال في تشكيل الوعي الوطني.
