Andean Uprisings

111
In the 18th c., the Andes erupted in rebellion. Juan Santos Atahualpa united jungle peoples (1742–52). Túpac Amaru II and his wife Micaela Bastidas led a vast revolt (1780–81), continued by his cousin Diego Cristóbal (1781–83). In Upper Peru, Túpac Catari besieged La Paz (1781). Though crushed, these leaders became enduring symbols of Indigenous resistance and autonomy.
