Max and Jelena are at a small boat drifting over the pink-tinged water of Lake Retba in Senegal. The lake’s distinctive color is caused by salt-loving microorganisms. With salinity far higher than most lakes, the water is dense enough that swimmers and boats can float with unusual ease.
