Romanesque Apostle Statue-Columns

69
These 12th-century Romanesque statue-columns from the Monastery of San Payo de Antealtares in Santiago de Compostela originally numbered four, possibly supporting an altar. Two remain, one is at Harvard, and one is lost. The alabaster column features apostles Peter, Andrew, and Paul, with Paul holding a scroll inscribed with a passage from Philippians. The marble column depicts Matthew, Bartholomew, and James, each identified by name, highlighting their spiritual significance.
