This anonymous 16th-century relief from the former convent of San Francisco in Palencia depicts the aftermath of the Descent from the Cross. The Virgin, Saint John, and others mourn Christ’s body, carved in wood with exceptional anatomical and expressive detail. Its emotional intensity and catechetical purpose aimed to move viewers and strengthen their faith.
