This 2002 statue honors Russian writer Nikolai Gogol (1809–52), who spent productive years in Rome. Donated by the Russian government, it reflects Gogol’s deep connection to the city, where he wrote much of his work. He believed only from Rome could he see Russia “in its entirety, in all its vastness.”
