Basalt Millstone from a Bakery

This lava stone mill (2nd–3rd cc.), found in an Ostian bakery, was used to grind grain into flour. The hourglass-shaped design allowed a wooden shaft and harness to turn the upper stone with donkey or human power. Such mills were vital to daily Roman life, reflecting the industrial scale of bread production in urban centers.
