The Expulsion from Paradise (detail)Bonanno Pisano

This panel from The Porta di San Ranieri (c. 1180) by Bonanno Pisano depicts the Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden. The composition moves left to right: Adam and Eve, after the Fall, are confronted by the serpent, then driven out by an angel wielding a sword. The figures’ gestures express shame, guilt, and divine judgment. Created in bronze, the scene captures the transition from innocence to exile. The original door, which survived the 1595 fire, is preserved at the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Pisa.
