The Triumph of DeathBuonamico Buffalmacco
The Triumph of Death (Buonamico Buffalmacco) is the most searing fresco in the Camposanto Monumentale’s 14th‑c. wall cycle, painted 1336–41 as a civic meditation on mortality and salvation in an age shadowed by disease and unrest. In The Triumph of Death , elegant riders confront open coffins as demons and angels battle for souls and Hell yawns beside scenes of courtly ease, turning the cemetery into a moral theater. Severely damaged in the 1944 fire, its careful restoration has made it a landmark of both medieval imagination and modern conservation.
