Citadel of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port
The Citadel of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port crowns the town above the Nive valley, a stone statement of France’s Pyrenean frontier. Raised in the 17th c. and later strengthened within Vauban’s defensive system, it controlled the pass routes into Spain and asserted royal authority over a borderland shaped by trade, conflict, and shifting allegiances. For many, its ramparts also mark a threshold on the Camino de Santiago, where a fortified climb gives way to the open mountains beyond.
