Auxerre CathedralCathédrale Saint-Étienne d'Auxerre
Saint-Étienne Cathedral of Auxerre rose through 13th–16th cc. building campaigns above an older Romanesque crypt, proclaiming the city’s medieval episcopal power and devotion to St Stephen. Its west portals turn scripture into sculpture, while stained glass washes the nave in shifting color. Below, the 12th c. fresco Christ on a White Horse preserves a stark Romanesque vision of apocalypse. Never fully finished, the cathedral remains Auxerre’s defining stone memory on the Yonne.
