Stylized Bat Pendant from Ear Ornament
This gold pendant (1 BC–700 AD), made in the Middle Tolima region, once formed part of an ear ornament. Its stylized bat-like wings and spiral “eyes” blend human and animal traits, expressing nocturnal and transformative power. Such objects, worn by ritual or elite figures, reflect the symbolic role of bats in pre-Columbian cosmology as mediators between the earthly and spiritual worlds.
