Royal Emblems on Tutankhamun’s Funerary Mask
This detail from Tutankhamun’s funerary mask (c. 1323 BC) features the uraeus cobra (Wadjet) and vulture (Nekhbet), symbols of divine protection over Lower and Upper Egypt. Crafted from gold and inlaid with glass and semi-precious stones, these emblems affirmed the pharaoh’s legitimacy and sacred guardianship. They extended their protective power into his eternal journey through the afterlife.
